SPN 641: VGT Turbo Actuator
What SPN 641 Is
On Detroit DD13 / DD15 / DD16, SPN 641 is the VGT (variable geometry turbo) actuator. FMI 7 (mechanical not responding) is the everyday code: actuator motor failed, or vanes packed with soot so the actuator cannot reach position. Related Detroit codes include SPN 2634 (VGT position error) on some calibrations.
Symptoms: low power, black smoke if vanes stick open (low boost), high exhaust temp if vanes stick closed (too much backpressure), and regen problems because the engine cannot make the heat you need.
Common FMI Combinations
| FMI | Meaning | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Not responding / out of adjustment | Commanded vs actual, vanes vs motor |
| 4 / 5 | Circuit low / open | Connector at the actuator, harness |
| 13 | Out of calibration | After replacement, DDDL learn procedure |
Diagnostic Order
- In DDDL, compare commanded VGT percent to actual. If commanded moves and actual does not, mechanical or dead motor.
- Inspect the actuator connector (heat, oil). Circuit FMIs stop here.
- If the actuator is new-ish, pull it and check vane movement. Soot-bound vanes need turbo/housing service, not another actuator.
- After a good actuator install, run the OEM calibration/learn. FMI 13 after a slap-in replacement is this step skipped.
We use a Nexiq USB-Link 3 and a diagnostic laptop with DDDL for actuator tests and learns. Same adapter works for Cummins INSITE if the truck is not a Detroit.
