SPN 1569: Engine Protection Torque Derate
What SPN 1569 Is
SPN 1569 is engine protection torque derate — an action, not a component. The ECM has already decided to cut torque to protect the engine or aftertreatment. The FMI tells you the derate is present. It does not tell you why.
Treat every 1569 as a pointer: scroll the list for DPF soot, SCR efficiency, DEF level, NOx, coolant, or exhaust temperature. Clearing derates without that work is how the truck dies on the on-ramp.
FMI Notes
FMI 31 (condition exists) is the one you will see. Severity lives in the other codes and in OEM derate level (torque cut vs speed limit). Pair with aftertreatment derate levels.
Find the Primary Code
- Do not graph 1569. Graph the aftertreatment and engine codes next to it.
- Common primaries: 4364 SCR efficiency, 3251 DPF delta P, 1761 DEF empty, 3226 outlet NOx.
- If 5246 is also active, you are on the inducement ladder, not just a torque haircut.
- Fix, verify with a drive cycle or parked regen as the OEM requires, then clear. Some platforms need an ECM reset of inducement counters.
Remote sessions use a Nexiq USB-Link 3 and a diagnostic laptop so we can see derate level, timers, and the primary SPN in the same screenshot you are looking at in the bay.
