What SPN 5246 Is

SPN 5246 is SCR operator inducement — the EPA-mandated speed and torque ladder when aftertreatment faults are ignored. It is not a failed DEF pump by itself. It is the ECM enforcing a countdown that started because another code stayed active.

Inducement Stages

Exact timers differ by OEM (Cummins hours vs Detroit vs PACCAR), but the shape is the same:

• Stage 1 — warning lamp, about 25% torque derate
• Stage 2 — about 55 mph
• Stage 3 — about 25–35 mph
• Stage 4 — 5 mph

FMI Hints

• FMI 15 — inducement just starting (least severe)
• FMI 16 — escalating
• FMI 0 — most severe / near final
• FMI 31 — condition exists

What Actually Clears It

1. Find the primary: 4364, 3364, 1761, NOx 3216/3226, dosing, DPF.
2. Repair it for real. A code clear without a repair restarts the clock, it does not stop it.
3. Run the OEM reset / parked regen / drive cycle. Some Cummins and Detroit units need a specific number of warm drive cycles.
4. Confirm 5246 inactive and no new aftertreatment codes before you release the truck.
