Detroit DD13/DD15/DD16: SPN 3251 and DPF pressure
If your Detroit DD13, DD15 or DD16 reports SPN 3251, the FMI and emissions generation change its interpretation. This guide's references distinguish out-of-range pressure from an implausible signal. Searching for “Detroit DPF sensor” and replacing the first part you find is not enough.

DOC inlet and DPF outlet: identify both signals
Detroit's January 2015 revision for 3251/FMI 0 and 16, EPA10/GHG14, uses DOC inlet and DPF outlet pressure. It also directs technicians to address SPN 3609/FMI 3 or 4 first if present. Source 1.
For 3251/FMI 2 EPA10, the documentation considers signal, connection and tube consistency. For 3251/FMI 20 GHG17, it separates 1-Box and 2-Box configurations. These differences explain why a test from another generation can lead to the wrong conclusion. Source 2 and source 3.
When sharing a screenshot, include the complete parameter name. “Pressure: 4” does not identify the measurement point, unit or engine condition.
What to save before asking for help
Prepare a report that identifies your vehicle and captures the fault context. If the equipment shows several codes, save the complete list; an isolated number can hide the information needed to select the procedure.
- Engine model, serial number and emissions generation.
- Complete code, description, module and active or inactive status.
- Name of each pressure parameter, value, unit and engine condition.
- Observed symptom and when it occurs: startup, idle or operation under load.
- Recent repairs and what changed after they were performed.
Do not compare two screenshots if the units or measurement conditions differ. This list helps prepare your inquiry; limits and tests come from the applicable service manual.
Frequently asked questions
Does SPN 3251 always mean DPF differential pressure?
Do not assume so from the number alone. In the cited Detroit examples, identify the DOC inlet and DPF outlet signals and the corresponding FMI branch.
Are FMI 2 and FMI 20 the same?
The references cited here address different generations: FMI 2 EPA10 and FMI 20 GHG17. Both examples question plausibility, but that does not make their tests interchangeable.
Is the truck's model year enough to select a procedure?
No. Save the serial number, EPA/GHG generation and aftertreatment configuration. Select documentation for the installed engine.
